Agatized coral is a translucent chalcedony with small crystals, banding, and rich coloration. It has been the official state stone of Florida since 1979 and can be found in Tampa Bay, the Econfina River, and the Withlacoochee/Suwannee river beds.

Agatized coral is a rare, fossilized coral that forms when silica replaces the original calcium carbonate skeleton of a coral colony. This process, called permineralization, can take 20–30 million years and results in a "pseudomorph," where one mineral replaces another without losing its original form. The silica fills the void left behind by the coral's internal structure, preserving the organism's original shape and pattern. The resulting fossil is often lined with smooth, spherical agate, a type of banded chalcedony that can be colorful due to trace minerals like iron and manganese.

Some believe that coral and agate have metaphysical properties:

  • Coral: Can symbolize modesty, wisdom, happiness, and immortality. It is also said to help with spasms, sleeplessness, and bladder stones, and to reduce stress and fears.

  • Agate: May help heal pancreatic disorders and improve blood and air circulation.

Agatized Coral is an emotional healer. It shows us the power love has to create change in our lives. It can help calm our irritabilities and encourage us seek and understand the universal knowledge that has been lost throughout the ages. This is a perfect crystal for those recovering from a physical or mental trauma.
